Two in a ‘Roe’ at Lancs Grand National
Newton-le-Willows MCC (ACU)
Lancashire Grand National Weekend
Bleak Hall MX, Burscough
Report and Photos: Chris Heys
Last Saturday we held our end of season Fun Day with some great prizes up for grabs, trophies for all youth riders and ‘le-mans’ style starts thrown in. This was followed on Sunday by a traditional annual event in our calendar, the Lancashire Grand National which has had some notable past winners.
An overcast Saturday welcomed us to Bleak Hall but just one downpour in an entertaining auto race didn’t dampen our spirits and certainly didn’t drown out the start line music. All the riders were also split into teams on Saturday to add a little spice and competitiveness and a massive well done to the 21 riders in Team B who took the win by nearly 100 points and all took home a prize each.
In Saturday’s Adult group, Tom Kelly took two race wins and the overall with Jamie Sandham taking second on the day and Roy Prescot took a race win and third overall.
Saturday’s Youth 125 group was topped by Brad Harrison with 2 race wins. William Orrit took second spot with Callum O’Rourke third.
The first maximum of the weekend came in the Big Wheel 85 group and it was the blistering pace of Jack Kelly that earned it. Kyle Platt kept the pressure on all day but had to settle for second and consistent riding earned Ryan Proctor third overall.
Small Wheel 85’s up next and Wil Bimson was the man in form taking two race wins and the overall in a very close fought group. Josh Semple took the final race win and earned second place and he was hotly pursued by Aaron Roe.
Callum Bircher won two races in the Junior 65 group and this was enough for the overall ahead of first race winner Brandon Sharples. Connor Challingor rode consistently and wrapped up third overall on the day.
The second maximum of the day went to Finley Beard who yet again showed he is the master of the Auto class. He was pursued all day by Callum Maguire in second and Corey Flynn who had a great ride to secure the final podium position.
Sunday dawned and the sun shone on our eagerly anticipated Lancashire Grand National day and we were not to be disappointed with the racing. Holeshot prizes were also awarded throughout the day.
It was clear from the start of the first adult race that these guys wanted the Grand National cup and a share of the winner’s spoils. Kev Wells gated quickly and secured Sunday’s first maximum. Tom Kelly gave it all he had but a fall in race one and a stalled engine on the gate in race three saw his challenge end. These two riders gave a great lesson on how to ride this technical track and their ability to jump the many obstacles and rail the perfect berms left other riders in awe. A great ride from Glen Wilson saw him comfortably wrap up third overall.
Youth 125 action saw Brad Harrison top the podium again, this time chased by third race winner, Danny Walker and William Orrit who bagged the final spot on the box.
Setting up the first maximum of the weekend and continuing his blistering pace was Jack Kelly in the Big Wheel 85 group. Kyle Platt and Ryan Procter came in second and third mirroring their Saturday results.
In the Small Wheel 85 group, Aaron Roe took the overall and set up the first half of a brotherly double. A race win in the final outing for Josh Semple sealed second overall and second race winner Wil Bimson claimed third spot.
Aaron’s brother Drew took a maximum in the Junior 65 class. He was pressured early in all the races by Callum Bircher who took second and hot on his tail was Brandon Sharples who never let him out of his sights all day.
Our second weekend maximum was claimed in the Auto class by Finley Beard and in a repeat of Saturday’s podium, Callum McGuire secure second and Corey Flynn nailed down third.
With champagne (or fizzy pop) for the podium achievers, there was a lot of spraying and drenched children at the end of the day. All riders took home prizes and this was thanks to the generosity of our sponsors. A fantastic weekend was over and it seemed a fitting finale to a great 2009. Dee-Jay’s Walk’over
Newton-le-Willows MCC (ACU)
Youth Rounds 10/11- Adult Round 7
Turnover Farm, Garstang
Report and Photos: Chris Heys
The rains came to Garstang on Saturday morning, but the heavy downpours were absorbed well by the track which had received some excellent preparation.
The Auto riders battled through their first mud race but by midday the track was perfect and just improved all weekend.Championship leader, Finley ‘Rossi’ Beard took a maximum on both days in the Auto class but was hotly pursued by ever improving Callum McGuire all weekend. Corey Flynn showed some great riding and was rewarded with 3rd overall on both days.
The Junior 65 group had a good turnout again and it was Dee-Jay Walker who took another double day maximum but his job wasn’t easy. Saturday saw Dexter Douglas and Louis Hurst take second and third place. Sunday saw Dee-Jay pushed hard all day by James MacFayden and Arran Woodward who took second and third respectively.
Small Wheel 85’s up next and Aaron Roe took his first ever overall on Saturday after some great riding and two race wins. He was hotly pursued by third race winner Sam Godkin who took second on the day with Tayla Smith in third. Sunday’s SW group saw Josh Semple in top spot followed by Tayla Smith in second and Sam Godkin in third.
Tom Davies took another weekend’s maximum in the Big Wheel 85 class. Saturday saw Ian Forsyth take second and Ryan Proctor third. Ryan and Ian reversed their positions on Sunday and offered the crowd some great racing trading places all day.
Saturday’s Youth 125 group was topped by Brad Harrison after three race wins, Callum O’Rourke followed him home with William Orritt third. Joshua Mann took over the winners spot on Sunday with William Orrit taking second on the podium after two race wins and newly upgraded Bracken Hindle taking a fantastic third spot.
The Adult group on Saturday was a non-championship event. Brad Mercer was quick out of the blocks with the first two race wins but Cliff and Ray Prescott pushed him all the way with Cliff taking the final race win and second on the day and Ray third.
A great turnout of Adult B’s on Sunday’s was topped by a fine performance from Ben Godkin taking two race wins. First race winner Glen Wilson had to settle for second and Glen Baron third but all the top positions were decided in the last race in this closely fought group
A welcome return to the club saw Kev Wells run away with the Adult A’s with three race wins and some blistering lap times. Gary Jones showed Kev a wheel early on but had to settle for second on the day followed by Matthew Morris in third.
Yet again, great track preparation paid dividends and gave us another smooth running weekend. Saturday night’s Bingo drew some big crowds and some big winners!
Thanks go out to all our volunteers including the lap scorers and marshals who got drenched a couple of times on Saturday. Full details of our events together with photos and results from our meetings can be found on our website at www.nlwmcc.co.uk

Drew Roe’d well at Ribchester
Newton-le-Willows MCC (ACU)
Club Championship
Youth Round 9 – Adult Round 6
Catterall’s Farm, Ribchester
Report and Photos: Chris Heys
The thunderstorms and heavy rains of Saturday evening were soon forgotten as we woke to a beautiful hot summer’s day in the Ribble Valley at historic Ribchester. Saturday’s heavy rain had given all the kids a good wash and left the naturally undulating track in top condition. With some new sections in the woods; a great day’s racing was in store. We were not to be disappointed.
First out were the Auto riders and it was Finley ‘Rossi’ Beard who hit the front first and took 2 wins and a second place for the overall. He was chased hard all day by Louis Jones who took the final race win and Max Critchley who never lost sight of the front two all day and earned himself the final podium spot.
The Junior 65 group had a good turnout again and it was Dee-Jay Walker who took the first two race wins after some great battles with Drew Roe, but it was Drew who took the overall with a final race win after Dee-Jay dropped a few too many points in the final encounter but still took second overall. Brandon Sharples took third after some great riding.
A near full gate of Small Wheel 85’s saw the first maximum of the day and it was Reece Desoer who took the honours after some great racing and battles with Sam Godkin and Ryan Johnson. Sam took second and Ryan ended the day with third overall.
The Big Wheel 85’s were out next and saw another maximum from Kyle Platt. Never far behind him were Ryan Procter and Ian Forsyth who battled hard all day taking second and third overall.
The Youth 125’s on Saturday were on fire with some great racing right through the field. Danny Walker took the first race win but it was Robert Moss who took the next two race wins and the overall with Danny ending up second overall. William Orrit pushed himself into third overall and was never far off the front.
Another near full gate of Adult B’s took to the track next and each race brought a different race winner. Top spot on the day went to Jordan Dawes with David Orritt in second and Jack Richardson in third pushing him all the way.
The fastest group of the day was out next and the Adult A’s showed some great racing. Scott Ward dominated with three race wins. Hot on his heels were Danny Mallabone in second and Colin Gibson’s consistency earned him third overall.
Yet again, great track preparation paid dividends and gave us another smooth running day. Thanks go out to all our volunteers including the lap scorers and marshals who baked in the sunshine all afternoon. Our next meeting is a 2 day event at this venue and full details together with photos and results from each meeting can be found on our website at www.nlwmcc.co.uk

Newton-le-Willows MCC
Youth Rd 8, Adult Rd 5 Club Championship
Bleak Hall MX – 7th June 2009
Report and Photos: Chris Heys
Newton le Willows MCC hosted their championship round at Bleakhall in weather that totally contradicted all forecasts. After much preparation and watering the track was in fantastic shape and the stage was set for a great days racing.
The Auto’s kicked off with the field chasing Finley ‘Rossi’ Beard who was in fine form again and he took the overall win from Louis Jones and Connor Ellis.
It was the Juniors up next and Dee-Jay Walker set the pace with three wins from three. The rest of the pack mixed it up all day and Declan Hindle took second overall after some great racing from Drew Roe in third.
Next out were the SW85’s and Sam Godkin took another three race wins but Sheldon Fox had a fantastic day taking second and pushing Sam all the way. Callum Barber kept the championship pressure on with a third overall.
BW85’s were next to go and Kyle Platt had a clean sweep from Ryan Procter closely followed by Ian Forsyth in third. The battles for position in this class were outstanding and a number of riders could have made the top three.
A well attended Youth 125 group showed the crowd some great racing and after taking the first two race wins Danny Walker had to give in to hard charging Stacey Fisher in the final encounter but not after retaking the lead a number of times in a thrilling battle. Danny took the overall with Stacey second and a second and two thirds saw William Orrit tie up third overall.
The popularity of the Adult B was there for all to see with another strong field and it was Glen Wilson taking the overall from Adam Cookson. A last race win secured third on the day for Brad Ashcroft
The Adult A group were on blistering form and saw a welcome return to the club this year for Kev Wells who took the overall with three race wins. A fine performance from championship regular Barrie Marshall who pushed Kev all the way for second overall. Ben Haycocks consistency secured him third overall and the final prize paying position.
Yet again a massive thanks to all the volunteers who made this event happen, especially the track preparation guys, lap scorers and all those who had ‘no faith whatsoever’ in the weather forecasters and turned up for a great days racing. Our next meeting is at Ribchester on 28th June 2009. For further details of all our events, full results and photos, please visit our website – www.nlwmcc.co.uk

‘Super-Moto-Cross’ at Bleak Hall
Newton-le-Willows MCC (ACU)
Bleak Hall Farm
Report: Chris Heys
Photos: Marty Hill and Chris Heys
An exciting mix of stars from dirt and tarmac lined up for Newton-le-Willow’s Championship Rounds at Bleak Hall Farm. Following atrocious mid-week weather the track team did a tremendous job and but for 20 minutes of heavy rain on Saturday the gods were looking down on us and we had a full weekend of excellent racing.
Competition in the Adults was fierce with some close racing. The first 5 riders mixed up the top positions all day. European Youth MX2 star Tom Kelly onboard his RMZ250 and a brace of KTM mounted Supermoto stars, Christian Iddon and Richard Blakeman took on our regular Club Championship contenders on the dirt of Bleak Hall. Tom Kelly rode faultlessly to take a clean sweep of all 3 motos while Christian Iddon’s fall in the first race took his overall out of contention but he followed up with some strong rides in the next two and kept the crowd on their feet. Ex multi-time Club Champion Richard Blakeman, made a welcome return and a smooth transition off the tarmac to the dirt stuff and put in 3 strong rides for 4th overall on the day but it was regular Club Championship rider Barrie Marshall who made 2nd on the day with some fine rides, heading the field on a few occasions too. Gary Jones’ brace of 3rd places in the first two motos were enough to secure 3rd overall on the day.
A healthy gate of Adult B riders took to the track next and although securing two moto wins, Glen Wilson had to settle for 2nd overall behind Adam Cookson who was more consistent on the day. Brad Ashcroft pushed them all the way but ended 3rd on the day after a bad first race result left him with too much to do.
Saturday was Youth only day and all youth groups got four fantastic blocks of racing under their belts, despite one heavy shower which the track quickly recovered from.
The Youth 125’s on Saturday were dominated by Brad Harrison with 2 wins and 2 second places, he was closely followed by Harley Fox who took one race win and William Orrit whose consistency earned him 3rd on the day. Sunday saw Stacey Fisher quick of the mark and she led the first race from start to finish. Although Stacey led the next two races it was Robert Moss who came out on top with two final moto wins and a great display of riding. Danny Walker made it 3rd overall after getting up and fighting back from a spectacular crash in the final moto.
Big Wheel 85’s were out next and Saturday saw Kyle Platt take a maximum 4 wins from four motos with Tom Davies following him home all day. Ian Forsyth took a fantastic 3rd overall with some very consistent riding. Sunday saw a reversal of results as Tom Davies had a clean sweep ahead of Ryan Procter whose three 3rd places earned him second on the day. Bracken Hindle took 3rd overall. His ride from the back to 2nd place in the second moto was something special and earned him deserved podium finish for the day.
In the Small Wheel 85’s on Saturday it was Sam Godkin showing good pace up front and 2 wins from 4 secured the overall for Sam. Ever improving Josh Semple took a moto win and 2nd overall and Callum Barber’s consistent run netted him 3rd overall. Will Bimson took the final race win but it was not enough to get him in a podium position. Sunday’s Small Wheel group saw the top 3 from Saturday mix it up a bit and Callum Barber was faultless in taking all 3 race wins for the overall, Sam Godkin followed home for 2nd and Josh Semple rounded out the top three.
Saturday’s Junior 65 group had the worst of the rain to contend with for their final moto and this class saw some great battles between Dee Jay Walker, James McFayden and Drew Roe, each of them winning a moto. Dee Jay held his nerve and took the overall from James. Drew Roe could have been there at the top but his last race crashes put paid to that. Sunday saw the same 3 riders battling again with Drew and James taking the race wins. James McFayden took the overall from Dee Jay Walker with Drew Roe following them home in third. A massive well done to all the Junior riders who rode in the worst 15 minute rain fall we have seen for a long time.
Last and by no means least, only in their size, were the Auto riders. Finley ‘Rossi’ Beard looked to be running away with the class after 3 wins on Saturday but a spectacular crash on the big table top meant he ended the day with a DNF. Louis Jones took a deserved win after pushing ‘Rossi’ all the way and was followed home with a strong finishing Callum Maguire. Little Kyle Foster battled hard all day and took a well deserved 3rd overall. Sunday came and ‘Rossi’ was back in front and making no mistakes this time taking all 3 moto wins. Louis Jones pulled out all the stops and followed him closely home in second and Callum Maguire backed up Saturday’s result with a podium on Sunday. Our new Auto riders this year are all improving rapidly and starting to catch up and trouble the ‘veterans’ in this class.
A massive thanks to the gods up above for keeping the rain off us for most of the weekend and to the ‘gods’ on the race track for some entertaining racing. Our usual array of helpers worked hard all weekend and played hard as well including the ever popular ‘Foxy’ Bingo which kept adults and children entertained on the Saturday evening. Ben Godkin taking a fine 3rd overall in the Adults Dee-Jay Walker – Sunday’s Maximum Man !
Newton le Willows hosted their second and third championship round at Bleakhall in baking sunshine, the track was in fantastic shape and the stage was set for a great weekends racing.
Saturday the Auto’s kicked off with the field chasing Leoni Tighe who was in fine form and took the overall win from Finley Beard who tried as hard as he could to haul Leoni in but to no avail, Louis Jones took third overall on the day.
Junior’s were out of the gates next and it was Keenan Hird setting the early pace with D J Walker close on his heels an ever improving Drew Roe was in good form taking third overall on the day.
Next out was SW85’s and Alec Carefoot was hard to catch as he run off with all three wins, Sam Godkin put up a fight but had to settle for second on the day with Taylor Smith making the top three.
BW85’s next to go and last years champion Ian Forsythe was up for a battle but ended third on the day behind Tom Davies who had a good weekend finishing second behind Kyle Platt who took all three wins.
School Boys ended the day’s proceedings with the adults only riding on Sunday’s and it was Brad Harrison who took the days first spot with Robert Moss a good second in front of Stacey Fisher who rode magnificently on her 250F to consolidate third on the day.
Entertainment split the evening up with the club running a bingo evening with cash prizes for the winners Foxy Bingo won two out of four games making it a cheap weekend.
Sunday morning soon came and with the track re-graded and watered ready for the next round again first off the block was Auto’s and Leoni Tighe took all three wins again making it an unbeaten weekend, again Finley Beard came second on the day with Louis Jones making up the top three.
Juniors next out of the block and DJ Walker took first overall with Brandon Sharples second and Arron Woodward taking third on the day.
SW85’s next out and it was Alec Carefoot who was the quickest taking all three wins for the top spot with Sam Godkin second and Joshua Semple Third on the day.
BW85’s next out and Kyle Platt was hard to catch and it was Tom Davies who had the best chance but had to settle for second on the day followed by Ryan Proctor third.
SB125 next out and again Brad Harrison followed by Robert Moss and Stacey Fisher all took the top three spots with some great racing.
Adult B had a strong gate and it was Danny Rae who came out on top with Adam Cookson and Ben Godkin taking the podium positions.
Adult A next to go and a fine performance from Barrie Marshall left the field fighting for the second and third spots and it was Ryan Sumner and Matt Morris who filled them.
It was a touch unfortunate that a couple of accidents forced three riders to retire with injury and our hopes are for a speedy recovery for all three riders.
8th March 2009 – Round 1 Club Championship
Girlpower ‘Tighes’ up the win
Report and Photos: Chris Heys
Newton le Willows MCC opened their 2009 championship season with a cracker at Preston Docks. Bad weather was forecast but for once did not arrive. The Preston Docks Team worked long hours on the track and it turned out immaculate. With nearly full gates in most classes it was time to forget the economic doom and gloom and enjoy what we all love – a great days’ racing with some exciting riders on show.
Quick out of the blocks in the Autos was Casey Hird but bike problems allowed ‘Girlpower’ to take over with Leonie Tighe taking the first win and with consistency on the day she also got the overall ahead of double race winner Casey. Newcomer Finley ‘Rossi’ Beard got a fantastic 3rd overall even after some spectacular crashes. Maximum man Callum Bircher took the overall in a hotly contested Junior 65 group, although he was chased hard by last years champion Keenan Hird and a fine 3rd overall went to Drew Roe. The largest youth group of the day was the Small Wheel 85 class and Casey Connelly was outstanding taking all 3 wins. Some great riding from Rees Desosr saw him chase Casey home in all 3 races. Sam Godkin rounded out the top 3 with some consistent riding. Big wheel 85 up next and with a share of wins between Tom Davies and Kyle Platt it was Tom who took the honours with 2 out of 3 wins. Nathan Dixons’ consistency paid off and got him 3rd overall. In the schoolboy 125 class the race wins were shared by the top 3. Bradley Harrison edged it over Bradley Lofthouse and a bad last race result saw Craig Maddock drop to 3rd overall. A super turnout in the Adult B group and again 3 riders shared the race wins. Best on the day went to Jack Richardson with Danny Rae and Daniel Woodward chasing him all the way to the chequers. Some fast racing in the Adult A group saw Stephen Wade come out on top with 2 race wins on the day. A bagful of second places for Danny Tollett earned him 2nd overall and a last race win couldn’t get Barry Marshell above 3rd overall.
The club would like to thank all those who ignored the weather forecast and hope they enjoyed a fantastic days’ racing in the sunshine of Preston Docks.
